Double bassist Dominic Law is enjoying a multi-faceted career as a performer and teacher. He has performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra as Guest Principal Bass, and appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Law is also a founding member of the Musicus Soloists, and has performed internationally with the ensemble in Hong Kong, Weimar, Berlin and Budapest. He actively freelances in New York City and has appeared with numerous groups including the Experiential Orchestra, String Orchestra of New York City, and Jupiter Chamber Symphony Players.

 

Mr. Law is an avid advocate for contemporary music and seeks to incorporate elements from genres outside of the classical canon in his collaborative projects. He is a founding core-member of Away From Keyboard, a contemporary chamber collective that incorporates play structures and game mechanics into their performances. He was also featured in Juilliard’s The New Series for the 22/23 and 23/24 seasons, performing Wynton Marsalis’ A Fiddler’s Tale and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Quintet for Violin, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, and Piano. Mr. Law has also participated several premieres as a cellist at Juilliard. He studied the cello for five years in secondary school and attained the Diploma of Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (DipABRSM) during that time.

 

As a solo performer, Mr. Law seeks to incorporate elements of Chinese folk music and Western historical performance into his practice, and to expand the double bass repertoire by transcribing pieces written for other instruments and commissioning composers to write for the bass. During his doctoral studies, Mr. Law performed his own transcription of The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto, as well as a recital program of compositions by J.S. Bach, Beethoven and Brahms in different period tuning systems.

 

Mr. Law has been appointed Music Theory Faculty at Opportunity Music Project for the 2024-25 academic year He is a teaching fellow for the Music History, Music Theory and Analysis departments at Juilliard. He previously served as Double Bass Faculty at the Long Island Music Conservatory, and as a fellow for the Juilliard Music Advancement Program, a Saturday conservatory-style program for students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in classical music. Mr. Law’s students have obtained outstanding results in NYSSMA graded Exams and first-chair placements in All-County orchestras. Mr. Law is a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellow at The Juilliard School, where he also completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. His principal teachers include Joseph Conyers, Timothy Cobb, Harold Robinson, and Rex Surany on the double bass; Doug Balliett on baroque bass; and Sarah Cunningham on viola da gamba. Mr. Law has received grants and awards from the Bei Shan Tang Foundation, Irene Diamond Graduate Fund, Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, and the Bernard van Zuiden Music Fund. In his spare time, Mr. Law enjoys watching soccer (football) and exploring Cantonese restaurants in New York City.
